DB2's GOT TALENT 2015

It's the International DB2 Olympics!

Today's Finalist Winners: Brandon, Roberto, Pratik, Sreeharsha, & Rohit

94% of our studio audience learned something! Today's presentations were surprisingly good considering that we had contestants from New Zealand, Mexico, and India! It fascinates me that we can gather around our computers and learn from industry peers all over the world. You will learn about improved indexes in V10.5, locking analysis and tips, how to improve Federated DB2 performance, a method to achieve high availability for DB2 10.5 using OS Clusters, insights from a DB2 z/OS DBA that experimented with DB2 LUW Express-C, and experiences with testing DB2 10.5 columnar tables with storage and performance results. Truly, this show contains a buffet of useful tips and advice! Enjoy!

We had one contestant no-show, but everyone else remarkably showed up and gave good presentations! Our no-show will be invited to try again on 20th February alongside our DB2 z/OS contestants. During our polling questions, we asked attendees why they did not enter the contest:

Top Reasons for Not being a DB2's GOT TALENT Contestant

It's a shame so many people are too busy. The DB2 community grows when people share their knowledge, and a growing community is good for all of our careers! Despite low contestant participation this year, we are proceeding nonetheless because our mission is to grow the DB2 community by sharing valuable education. Stick with us, I'm confident you're going to learn more from our international contestants.

NEWS FLASH!
New DB2 10.1/10.5 Certification Book!

On 13 February and 27 February, Mohan Saraswatipura and Kent Collins, authors of the forthcoming new DB2 certification book, will be our guests. They will teach various certification topics from the book, plus offer tips and advice. Mohan, you might recall, won DB2's GOT TALENT 1st place in 2013. Kent was our guest on Episode #115 talking about his BLU and pureScale experiences. Make sure you join us on these dates - just register for DB2's GOT TALENT if you haven't already!

It pays to learn DB2 on The DB2Night Show!

We like giving away gift cards! It's fun! Due to GoToWebinar® limitations for repeating webinars, there was no post-show survey today. If you have any show feedback, please email us at the address within your GoToWebinar participant emails.

I really appreciate that people participate in our polling questions. It is helpful and useful to know how our community is using DB2. So, just for fun, we're going to award an Amazon.com gift card to someone who participated in all of today's polling questions... (drum roll please) ... And the winner is Peter Schuetze with Church Mutual Insurance in Merrill Wisconsin! Brrrrr! It's cold up there! I hope he buys a warm hat and gloves! icon_wink

A message from our sponsor:

DBI Software

Today's "DBI Commercial" showcased reviewing a performance trend chart of I/O response times over a period of several months. It was pretty clear to see read and write latency times ranging from 5-200ms, then suddenly the I/O times flat lined to near zero milliseconds. Why? Well, DBI automatically tracks important changes in the database environment, plus provides the capability for users to add their own important events. These change events are then plotted in context on the trend charts. Well, sure enough, where the I/O latency time dropped to zero, there was a change indicator. We clicked on it and discovered that a HDD was replaced with a SSD!

You see, the point is, a trend chart without contextual event information is simply pretty at best. Without key events plotted on charts, you are left scratching your head and wondering "why?"
