100% of our studio audience learned something! I think that pretty much says it all! We've now had five shows in a row where 100% learned something!

During the show, a question came up about when the INGEST utility ends and under what conditions. Pat researched this with the lead developer and provided these answers:

• In one scenario, the sending process will continue to write to the pipe until it has no more data, then it will close the pipe. The ingest utility will then receive an EOF (the same as if it had reached the end of file input) and will exit appropriately.
  

  
  

• In another scenario, the sending process might keep the pipe open indefinitely to write data as it becomes available. In this case, the ingest utility will just continue to read data from the pipe whenever it is written.
  

  
  

• There is a config parameter PIPE_TIMEOUT that indicates the number of seconds that the ingest utility should wait for data on the pipe before timing out and exiting. The default is 600 seconds and can be set to any number. If set to zero, then it will wait indefinitely.
