Let's be honest - a relational database is 50% tricks (e.g. compression or
recovery) and 50% creating a great optimizer. Tricks can be copied (although
some vendor make a mess doing so), but the optimizer remains the best secret.
The optimizer is what sets relational databases apart from each other.
Relational database are like cars. In the top 4 there are no bad cars, but a
Mercedes is a different car than a BMW. The same applies to relational
databases, DB2 is different from Oracle. And the optimizer is the piece that
makes the difference. And although the optimizer internals will remain a secret,
there is a lot you can learn about the optimizer. I have known Terry Purcell
since the late 90’s and was very pleased when he told me many years ago that he
joined the IBM optimizer team. Terry’s knowledge about relational databases and
the way SQL can and must be optimized is more than just great. And… he is also
a great presenter, which you can experience again in today’s episode. Missed
