For those of you that are new to this blog, let me recap season one of “Cloudy, with a Chance of Goofballs,” where we discovered that in the Cloud:
|
|
- Your data might get permanently lost.
- Your data might be located in a country better known to the International Criminal Court in The Hague than to you.
- Unvetted people you do not know will likely work with your data.
- Your costs will go up.
All of this is the equivalent of categorizing an NBA prospect by observing, “He may be short, but he’s slow.”
Now to season two: Ian Barker recently came out with a story in betanews with this headline: “Management underestimates the time and cost needed for the cloud.” It is a short article, and well worth reading in its entirety. It reports the results of a survey of 400 “IT decision makers” conducted by Wakefield Research and Logicworks. Here are the most startling of the findings:
|
...believe that their company’s leadership team underestimates the time and cost required to maintain resources in the cloud.1 |
|
...report that they are only somewhat confident that their organization could immediately address an issue that led to downtime in cloud services.2 |
|
...of respondents believe their organization’s IT workforce is not completely prepared to address the challenges of managing their cloud resources over the next five years.3 |
So in other words, if all of the reasons listed at the beginning of this blog were not enough, here’s another - if something breaks, the IT decision makers aren’t sure their companies can fix what’s broken! You did not get to your position as an executive leader in your company by crossing your fingers and hoping for the best. No, you challenge assumptions, push back against fuzzy “strategery,” and demand facts. It is high time you did exactly that when it comes to your organization’s valuable databases.
Remember, if your database is sick, your organization is unhealthy, your customers are unhappy, and your reputation suffers. It is far too important to leave to chance. That is why, when it comes to your IBM DB2 LUW databases, we sweat the details. We do not assume, we test. Our patented, award-winning software:
- Empowers you to get more performance out of the CPUs, memory, and software you already have - saving you millions of dollars.
- Pinpoints exactly what costs the most (in terms of taxing your database) and what hurts the most. Root cause problems are revealed in seconds.
- Enables you to make changes and verify that they fixed the existing problems while not cause new ones.
The best solution for your database is not punting your database to the cloud and praying everything works out OK; it’s managing your data onsite and turning to the proven solution - DBI Software. Moreover, if you are still determined to venture into the cloud despite all the risks, we can help you successfully manage your costs there as well.
What You Must Know
Crossing your fingers and hoping for the best is not a business survival strategy.
